Westmoreland County Public Auction

Purchasing Department

September 23, 2015, Westmoreland County will be holding a public auction for surplus vehicles at the Public Works Building, Donohoe Road, Greensburg at 9:00 am.  View details, including auction inventory and photos.

Election Bureau

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.  Other key dates:

Oct 5   Last day to register before the election
Oct 27 Last day to apply for a civilian absentee ballot
Oct 30 Last day for County to receive voted civilian absentee ballots

Visit the Election Bureau website and use the tabs at the top to view polling places, sample ballots (posted shortly before the election) and view election results.  There is also information for military and overseas voters, voters with disabilities as well as links to check voter registration status and search for your assigned polling place by address.  On August 27, Pennsylvania became the 23rd state to adopt online voter registration.

On Election Night, follow Westmoreland County on Facebook or Twitter for links to election results as they are processed at the courthouse.  Or, sign-up for election results via email or text notifications.

Juvenile Probation

Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation is hosting a Family Fall Funfest Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 3:30-6:00 pm at Twin Lakes Park Activity Center.  This family friendly, all-ages event will have live entertainment, face painting, light refreshments, crafts and an opportunity to meet the department.  Contact Michele Wentzel at 724) 830-4266 for more info.

Hobgoblin Hikes

Parks and Recreation

Hobgoblin Hikes - Half mile, outdoor hikes through the haunted woods of the Parks!  Wander through haunted mazes, creepy cemeteries, and eerie tunnels with frights around every corner!  Hikes are offered on Mammoth Park on Friday, October 23 and at Northmoreland Park on October 30.  Recommended for visitors age 8 and up.  Volunteers are also needed for scare stations and tour guides.  Visit the Hobgoblin event page for more information!

You've Got a Friend Day, October 7 - A fun day of activities at Twin Lakes Park for students with special needs.  High school juniors and seniors from the area volunteer their time for this special day and are buddied up with special needs students to participate in activities such as hay rides, fishing, boating, pony rides, amusement rides, music, and a Pittsburgh Pierogi race!

Public Safety Department

Earthquakes can happen anywhere and most of the Northeast is prone to earthquakes.  You could be at home, at work, at school or even on vacation and are you prepared for what to do?
Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety prepares for all hazards and the preparation can save your life and help you recover.  The Department will be conducting an exercise of its Emergency Operation Center on October 15, 2015 at 10:15 am in conjunction with the Great North East ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.  The emergency support function partners and stakeholders will be encouraged to participate throughout the County to review and update emergency preparedness plans and equipment to help prevent injuries and loss of services.  Although a major earthquake is highly unlikely Gene Good, Strategic Planner and Grants Coordinator, Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety stated “… it is an excellent scenario to test the decision making skills of local emergency managers and agencies that support our emergency operations center.”
A disaster can happen at anytime, anywhere.  Be prepared and know what to do to protect your family, pets and property.

Each year, Westmoreland Children First sponsors a  fundraiser to support children under care of the Westmoreland County Children's Bureau, raising funds for essential needs not covered by governmental funds.

The Advisory Board of the Westmoreland County Children's Bureau invites you to the 4th Annual Wine & Chocolate Gala, Saturday, October 17, 2015, 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, 951 Old Salem Rd

2015 Health and Education Expo

Area Agency on Aging

Make plans now to attend the 2015 Health and Education Expo October 28th from 9 am to 3 pm at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center in Greensburg.  Bring a friend and learn about resources, and get empowered and educated  to become your own health advocate.  While you’re there, take part in free bone density, blood pressure, vision screenings and more.  You’ll also have the chance to learn about the benefits of massage, reflexology, and aromatherapy…and meet the WCOTC Therapaws team of dogs and their human partners! 

This event is free to all so don’t miss it!
Have you considered working as a paid caregiver? Agencies that provide training and employment will be on hand at the Expo.

Westmoreland Development Council

Industrial Development and Land Bank

The Board of Directors for the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation (WCIDC), in partnership with the Westmoreland County Land Bank, are announcing the acceptance and approval of Dore & Associates Contracting Inc.’s bid for environmental remediation and demolition of the former Monsour Medical Center.  Of the 13 bids received, Michigan-based Dore & Associates submitted the lowest qualified bid in the amount of $1,091,800.  The project is broken down into two phases. Dore & Associates’ bid is for phase I, which entails environmental remediation and demolition, is expected to start in early October with work expecting to take 6 months. Phase II will immediately follow the first phase and will include site preparation, utility extensions, and storm water improvements.

Planning and Development

The Planning Department is working on a community plan for Youngwood borough. Several meetings with the residents of Youngwood have already been held at the fire hall, for more information please call the planning department at 724.830.3600.

Community Development

The Community Development division has assisted the redevelopment of the Lamp Theater in downtown Irwin. $500,000 through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the state department of Economic Development contributed to the project. Local businesses matched the funds through volunteer hours and donations. CDBG money also contributed towards the Monsour demolition.

Redevelopment Authority

A $500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency was recently received and will go towards environmental site assessments throughout the county. Mt. Pleasant, Latrobe, and Jeannette formed a coalition to address blighted sites and to start identifying properties to be assessed.

Economic Growth Connection

The Economic Growth Connection continues to address the county’s workforce needs through the Westmoreland County Forum for Workforce Development.  The newly formed group of business-education representatives has been meeting regularly with the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit (WIU), Superintendents comprised of the 17 School Districts, as well as representation from the County Chamber of Commerce and local colleges/universities. Their Inaugural Dinner will be held Sept. 24.

Courthouse Featured in Documentary Series

The Westmoreland County Courthouse was recently featured in a documentary "Pennsylvania's Historic Courthouses" produced through a joint effort of Pennsylvania Cable Network and the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP).

Commissioner Tyler Courtney narrates the 30 minute episode featuring both the exterior and interior architecture of the Courthouse as well as the ornate rotunda and grand staircase. Watch the video to learn more about this architectural treasure!
