Presented by Katherine McLaughlin- M.Ed., AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator
People with intellectual disability/autism, ID/A, are often left out of the conversation about sexuality, almost as if they are incapable of having thoughts, feelings, and needs. In reality, they, too, are sexual beings that need information and skills for making healthy decisions about sexuality. As someone who works with people with ID/A, you may be the most likely person to discuss sexuality with them, or someone with a developmental disability may approach you with questions about sexuality. This workshop will help you become more comfortable talking about this sensitive topic by discussing what needs to be taught and when and how to help people with ID/A have safe and satisfying relationships.
A Question-and-Answer session will follow the presentation. Attendees may submit questions via the online Q&A chat.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Gain knowledge about sexuality and specific issues for people with ID/A
- Examine Human Sexual Development and similarities and differences for people with ID/A, including gender identity and sexual orientation
- Explore our own values and attitudes regarding sexuality and people with ID/A
- Examine trauma informed sexuality education for people with ID/A
- Explore ways to communicate about sexuality with people with ID/A and their parents/guardians
