Volunteer DAV Van Drivers Needed

Greensburg, May 20, 2021—Volunteer van drivers are urgently needed for Westmoreland County’s veterans’ free rides to the VA Pittsburgh for medical appointments. As is the case for many community organizations during the pandemic, the number of volunteers is at a historic low. But the need for veterans who lack transportation to access in-person medical appointments is beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels.

“While you may not have served in the military, you can play a role in supporting those who did. Our free van service, in partnership with Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Veterans Health Administration, depends on Westmoreland County citizens with a passion for service. Whether you can donate a day or two a month, or drive on a more regular basis, now is the time to sign up to volunteer, “said Matt Zamosky, United States Air Force veteran and Director of Veterans Affairs for Westmoreland County.

The van driver program is administered by the VA. Volunteers must have a clear driving record and apply and be sanctioned by the VA Pittsburgh voluntary services. Transportation is available to both VA Pittsburgh medical facilities thanks to volunteer drivers; trips are scheduled from central Westmoreland, Donegal, and New Kensington. Bona fide caregivers are also eligible for transport provided space is available and that their assistance is medically necessary. For the health and safety of drivers and passengers, we comply with all public health guidance.

For more information on volunteering as a van driver, contact Dane Franklin or Matt Zamosky at (724) 830-3530 or  [email protected] to find out more.
