[ARCHIVED] Understanding Hoarding Behaviors

woman holding door shut to overstuffed closet

Hoarding behaviors have become a fascination to many. Unfortunately hoarding is a social, mental health and community concern. Individuals who hoard have sentimental attachment to the things they collect. They have difficulty discarding belongings due to the emotional attachment and belief they may need the items at some other point in their life. They end up collecting so much that their “living space” may be confined to a small room or even a small area in their home. Though we usually hear of hoarding behaviors in older adults it actually begins in adolescence. It effects between 2-5 percent of the population, but due to its shame it does not surface until a crisis has happened. This program will discuss hoarding as a disease, as well as hoarding behaviors, demographics, assessment and interventions. The new “Hoarding Diagnosis” in the DSM 5 will be reviewed. Understanding the complexity of treatment for individuals who have “hoarding” behaviors will be discussed, emphasizing a cross system collaborative approach.
