The public is advised that currently there may be telephone scams being placed to County residents. One scam alleges that the caller is from the County Sheriff’s department demanding payment of money for failing to appear for jury duty. Westmoreland County does not contact jurors who fail to appear for jury duty by telephone and demand any kind of payment. Do not pay any monies to these callers.
Another scam mimics the Court’s telephone number demanding payments through PayPal for bail and other expenses for a family member that may be incarcerated. The County or Court does not contact family members for payment of bail or any expenses directly. All communication from the Court is in writing.
Anyone receiving calls of this nature is encouraged to hang up immediately and contact state and/or local police as well as the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection at (800) 441-2555 or [email protected].
