On Friday, June 28, 2019, Pennsylvania became the first state to deploy an automated system to seal criminal records for all qualifying formerly incarcerated or arrested people in the state.
Westmoreland County Clerk of Courts Bryan Kline reports 89,000 records were processed through the system the first weekend, adding that approximately 2 million will be processed by 2020.
Clean Slate is automated sealing* for:
- Criminal cases ending without convictions (not guilty or dropped charges)
- Summary offenses after 10 years
- Some misdemeanor convictions after 10 years without another conviction.
Eligible cases will be automatically sealed by June 27, 2020.
*Some additional misdemeanor convictions can be sealed by petition.
