Winter presents transportation challenges for everyone, not just seniors, but seniors are particularly challenged due to their being less likely to brave the roads in icy weather, less likely to change a flat tire, and in general less likely to cope with the stress of driving on snow and ice. Fortunately, there is an alternative for those who would otherwise not travel. There are two programs that may solve your wintertime traveling problems.
If you are 65 or older, you may qualify for the Priority Transportation Program sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging. Priority destinations include medical appointments, AAA Senior Center, Senior Center based shopping, AAA Adult Day Care, and AAA Vision Center. Rider pays only 5% of the full fare when the ride is scheduled one working day in advance and for many taxi companies, before 3 p.m., the day before the ride. In addition, for those 65 and older, the Shared Ride Program provides transportation for 15% of the regular unsubsidized fare to non priority destinations served by the appropriate taxi company when scheduled with same advance notice.
