[ARCHIVED] Family Emergency Plan

Your family may not be together when an emergency occurs so it is important to know how you will contact them and what to do in case of an emergency. Below are a few guidelines to help your family develop an emergency plan and remember to update this plan regularly.

• Have a family meeting and discuss why you need a plan and what types of emergencies your family may face.
• Keep your plan simple because complex plans are easy to forget and can be stressful.
• Plan where your family will meet. Consider a family member outside your area to be your family contact and information guide.
• Post emergency numbers near all phones in your home and educate children how to use them.
• Prepare to evacuate your home and review escape routes. Make special plans for small children and disabled seniors.
• Prepare to leave the area when necessary and identify where your family will meet. Follow the advice of local officials during evacuations.
• Keep your family records and important papers in a waterproof and fireproof safe.

Practice and maintain your plan. Practicing your plan will help your family make the right decisions during an actual emergency.
