Centenarian Honored By American Legion:
Paul Yeneral celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 30, 2018. But to him, it was just another Tuesday. Surrounded by friends, family and fellow veterans, Yeneral was recognized during a ceremony at American Legion Post 981 in South Greensburg (Westmoreland County). Yeneral said he was surprised by all of the attention but thanked everyone who came out in his honor. “I never questioned the fact that he would be 100,” his nephew Tom Yeneral said as his uncle laughed and cracked jokes with the Post 981 members who came to honor him. Funeral Announcement For Sailor Killed During WWII:
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that the remains of Navy Aviation Radioman 3rd Class Walter E. Mintus, 22, of Portage, PA, accounted for from World War II, are being returned to his family for burial with full military honors. On July 27, 1944, Mintus was a radioman aboard a torpedo bomber from U.S. Navy Torpedo Squadron Fifty One (VT-51). Mintus’ aircraft was the lead of four Avengers on a mission targeting the Japanese base at Malakal Harbor. The aircraft was last observed three to five miles ahead of the other aircraft, at the beginning of the attack. Read more.
New Bills Benefiting Farmers And Veterans Signed Into Law:
Bills introduced by Sen. Michele Brooks to give northwestern Pennsylvania farmers a stronger voice in Harrisburg and to increase assistance to Pennsylvania veterans were signed into law. Senate Bill 1171 modifies membership of the Nutrient Management Advisory Board by increasing the number of farmers from five to six and requiring that each of the Department of Environmental Protection’s six regions, including the northwest, is represented. Also signed into law was Senate Bill 945, Senator Brooks’ bill to allow Pennsylvanians who are renewing their vehicle registration for a two-year period to double their contribution to the Veterans Trust Fund from the current $3 amount to $6. Sankey Schedules November Veterans Outreach Events:
Veterans who live in the 73rd Legislative District are encouraged to take advantage of a service being offered by state Rep. Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield/Cambria) in cooperation with the Pennsylvania American Legion. “It’s been great to see the veterans in our area already taking advantage of this service,” Sankey said. “We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude for all they have done for us, and this is just one way we can begin to repay that debt.” Read more.

Female Veteran's Day Nomination Form:
Each year during Women’s History Month in March, the Pennsylvania Commission for Women hosts a Female Veterans Day Ceremony at the governor’s residence in Harrisburg in which women veterans from around the state are recognized for their selfless service and sacrifice for our country. Eligible candidates for consideration must be a current resident of Pennsylvania and have served a minimum of four years in the U.S. Military. Nominations must be received no later than Feb. 1, 2019. Remains Of MIA Airman Repatriated After 53 Years:
On Aug. 13, 1965, a flight of RC F-101 Voodoo reconnaissance jets roared in the mid-day skies over Son La, North Vietnam near the Laotian border. In the lead, was Lt. Col. Fredric M. Mellor of the United States Air Force Reserve. It was a particularly unlucky Friday the 13th, as enemy fire raked his Voodoo forcing him to eject. For decades, Mellor’s true fate remained a mystery. He was marked as “missing in action,” one of more than 2,600 U.S. service personnel unaccounted for during the Vietnam War. Read more.
U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs (VA) Joins Military Spouse Employment Partnership:
The VA Board of Veterans’ Appeals announced it is advancing employment opportunities for military spouses by joining the Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP). MSEP is a career program connecting military spouses with more than 390 affiliated employers who have committed to recruit, hire, promote and retain military spouses in portable careers. Read more.
Vietnam Veteran – It Takes A Hero To Ask For Help:
Pierre Williams was a young Marine whose job as a “tunnel rat” was to ferret out any North Vietnamese soldiers. There were poisonous snakes and danger around every corner. With the help of cognitive behavior therapy and prolonged exposure therapy at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, FL, Williams is learning to get past the pain. Williams suffered from nightmares, intrusive thoughts and flashbacks for years before reaching out for help in 2009 and learning he had post-traumatic stress. Read more.

As part of the blue button choices available to veterans with a premium account, veteran patients can view and download many of their medical images and reports online. They can be downloaded and then shared with their doctors inside and out of the VA health care system. Franklin County Veterans' Expo:
Franklin County, PA, government will hold its fourth annual veterans’ expo on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chambersburg Mall. More than 60 vendors will be in attendance, including representatives from the Martinsburg WV Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the VA regional office in Philadelphia. State Museum To Honor World War I Centennial With Veterans Day Bell Ringing And Uniform Display Opening:

- The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Brandon Rumbaugh, Sgt USMC (Ret). Brandon is a double amputee from his service in Afghanistan. Brandon is a motivational speaker who offers a message of strength through overcoming obstacles. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Immediately following the ceremony will be a luncheon at the Clarion University cafeteria. The luncheon will be free to all veterans.
Veterans Breakfast Club (VBC) At Night:

- Free food, cash bar. A panel discussion will focus on continuing service after leaving the military. The VBC is a nonprofit that creates communities of listening around veterans and their stories. Storytelling events, both morning and night, are held throughout western Pennsylvania. Veterans from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan share their stories. They are open to the public, and you don’t need to be a veteran to attend.
