Gov. Wolf Announces Veterans’ Trust Fund Grant Opportunities:
Gov. Tom Wolf announced that the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is accepting applications for the 2018-19 Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) grant cycle. Up to $800,000 in VTF grant funding will be competitively awarded for programs and services benefiting Pennsylvania veterans. Grant applications must be received by 3 p.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018. Read more.

PA's Adjutant General And Head Of DMVA Presented Meritous Service Medals To Outstanding Veterans Advocates:
Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, recently presented Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee chairmen – Rep. Steve Barrar, Rep. Chris Sainato and Sen. Randy Vulakovich with Meritorious Service Medals for their work and dedication to Pennsylvania military and veterans issues. DMVA Hosted A Veterans Service Officer Accredidation Training In Erie:
Recently, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, in conjunction with the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, held a week-long Accreditation Training in Erie, PA. The day brought 172 people together to receive Veterans Service Officer accreditation, which equips officers with specialized knowledge to help every individual veteran or beneficiary who comes to their office in need of assistance. The role of Pennsylvania Veterans Service Officers is critical to the needs of veterans, and the training gives them the authority to act as official veterans representatives who can help in executing claims to the Federal VA on their behalf. Remember To Safeguard Military Documents:
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs reminds veterans to file their military documents, such as a DD-214, at their county courthouse of record immediately upon leaving the military. This will allow veterans to obtain free certified copies for the remainder of their life. Documents filed at a Pennsylvania county courthouse are protected, and only accessible by the veteran who filed them, or by next-of-kin upon the veteran’s death. DMVA Still Looking For 12 Photos Of Pennsylvania Veterans Who Paid Ultimate Sacrifice In Vietnam:
To further honor and preserve the memory of our veterans for future generations, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in D.C. is leading an initiative to locate a photo for every U.S. service member who died during Vietnam. Berks Commissioners Approve Induction Of World War I Heroes:
Berks county commissioners approved the induction of nine Berks county military heroes from World War I into the 2018 class of the Berks County Military Hall of Fame, making a total of 61 members since the Hall of Fame was established nine years ago. Read more.
Murrysville Garden Club Dedicates Blue Star Military Memorial At Route 22 Trailhead:
The Murrysville (Westmoreland County) Garden Club typically raises money for student scholarships, hosts its annual garden tour and extols the virtues of a well-tended flower bed. This fall, however, they decided to do something to honor local veterans. “It’s a way for us to show our appreciation and respect for their sacrifices,” said club co-vice president Nina Damato of the Blue Star Memorial that was installed at the Roberts Trailhead just off the Westmoreland Heritage Trail in Murrysville. State Museum To Honor World War I Centennial With Veterans Day Bell Ringing And Uniform Display Opening:
The State Museum of Pennsylvania will honor the centennial of the end of World War I on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, with a ceremonial bell ringing and the opening of a new display. The museum will host a Bells of Peace ceremony on the ground-floor outdoor promenade, adjacent to North Street in Harrisburg (Dauphin County) with the tolling of its full-size replica Liberty Bell, originally exhibited at the 1964 World’s Fair. Secretary of State Encourages Pennsylvanians To Request Absentee Ballots Early:
Acting Secretary of State Robert Torres encouraged Pennsylvanians to submit requests for absentee ballots before the Oct. 30 deadline. Under the state election code, applications for absentee ballots must be submitted no later than one week before Election Day. For this year’s Nov. 6 midterm election, the deadline falls on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018. Read more.

A Hero Returns Home – Remains Of MIA Airman Repatriated After 53 Years:
On Aug. 13, 1965, a flight of RC F-101 Voodoo reconnaissance jets roared in the mid-day skies over Son La, North Vietnam near the Laotian border. In the lead, was Lt. Col. Fredric M. Mellor of the United States Air Force Reserve. It was a particularly unlucky Friday the 13th, as enemy fire raked his Voodoo forcing him to eject. For decades, Mellor’s true fate remained a mystery. He was marked as “missing in action;” one of more than 2,600 U.S. service personnel unaccounted for during the Vietnam War. Read more.
Secretary Perdue Announces $9.4M To Support Socially Disadvantaged And Veteran Farmers And Ranchers :
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will issue $9.4 million in grants to provide enhanced training, outreach, and technical assistance to underserved and veteran farmers and ranchers. This funding is available through the USDA’s Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers Program, managed by the USDA Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement. Governor Wolf Announces Expansion Of Veteran-Owned Homeland Manufacturing Services In Centre County, Creation Of New Jobs:
Governor Tom Wolf announced that Homeland Manufacturing Services, Inc., a veteran-owned electronics manufacturer, will expand and establish a new facility in Benner Township, Centre County, supporting the creation and retention of 30 jobs in the area. “Any time we can support Pennsylvania veterans in their business enterprises, it’s great news – but especially so when it means the business is creating good, reliable jobs in the manufacturing sector,” Governor Wolf said. Governor Wolf Announces Niagara Bottling, LLC, To Expand In Pennsylvania, Create More Than 50 New Jobs:
Governor Tom Wolf announced that Niagara Bottling, LLC, a manufacturer of private label bottled water, will expand in Pennsylvania and establish a new facility in Findlay Township, Allegheny County, creating more than 50 new jobs in the area. Niagara currently operates facilities in Lehigh and Berks counties in Pennsylvania. “The Pittsburgh region has a proud history of manufacturing, and Niagara’s decision to open a new facility here is the latest chapter in that history,” Governor Wolf said. Finding and maintaining meaningful employment can be a significant challenge, especially for veterans struggling with a serious physical or mental illness. The good news is that veterans don’t have to go through it alone. Erie VA Medical Center’s (VAMC) Compensated Work Therapy program helps veterans who have a serious physical or mental illness overcome barriers to employment by offering support throughout the entire job searching process. - The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Brandon Rumbaugh, Sgt USMC (Ret). Brandon is a double amputee from his service in Afghanistan. Brandon is a motivational speaker who offers a message of strength through overcoming obstacles. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Immediately following the ceremony will be a luncheon at the Clarion University cafeteria. The luncheon will be free to all veterans.

They are open to the public, and you don’t need to be a veteran to attend.
