The African American Veteran’s Experience:

2018 Veterans Breakfasts, Two Events Honoring Service Members:

PA’s Top Veterans’ Advocate Visits Sewickley’s Bridgeside Market: 

Mike Modugno, meet Anthony Carrelli. Aside from Maj. Gen. Anthony Carrelli’s operational camouflage pattern Air Force uniform, they looked like two guys talking shop at lunchtime in the Italian-style deli that Modugno opened five months ago at 201 Chestnut St. in Sewickley (Allegheny County). Carrelli leads the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and he was in town to learn from western Pennsylvania veterans like Modugno, an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to make other veterans aware of the programs the state offers to help them transition to civilian life. Secretary of State Encourages Pennsylvanians To Request Absentee Ballots Early: 

Acting Secretary of State Robert Torres encouraged Pennsylvanians to submit requests for absentee ballots before the Oct. 30 deadline. Under the state election code, applications for absentee ballots must be submitted no later than one week before Election Day. For this year’s Nov. 6 midterm election, the deadline falls on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018. Read more.


DAV Transportation Network - Looking For Volunteer Drivers: 

Interested in giving back to local veterans? Join the DAV Volunteer Transportation Network team as a volunteer driver and help transport veterans to and from VA appointments. The DAV Volunteer Transportation Service is a free courtesy service, first come, first served, that is run by volunteers. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer driver, you can call a Voluntary Service Officer at 814-860-2454. Applicants must fill out an application packet and also must pass a volunteer driver physical, driver license background check, and complete driver training.


Town Halls Scheduled To Help Cambria County Veterans Receive Benefits: 

Navigating the bureaucracy of the Veterans Administration can be difficult. That's why officials in Cambria County are stepping in to help. This past fiscal year, Cambria County was No. 1 throughout the commonwealth, filing the most claims and receiving millions of dollars in benefits for veterans. Read more.

Civil War Veteran's Grave Gets Headstone After Nearly 151 Years: 

The grave of a Civil War veteran buried in the Lewisburg Cemetery is unmarked no more. The cemetery’s president unearthed Army records and an obituary to prove it was Corporal Milton Airey buried without a headstone between the marked graves of his brothers. As the 151st anniversary of his death approaches, a marble Civil War headstone is now in place for the late soldier. “I discovered that for generations, Milton Airey has been confused with his brother, William,” Nancy Neuman said. Commemorating USS Olympia And The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier: 

Last month, Congressman Robert Brady (D-Pennsylvania) introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and the creation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 116,516 Americans died in the war which ended on Nov. 11, 1918, and another 200,000 were wounded. Chambersburg's Vietnam Memorial Is Relocated To Fort Chambers Park: 

The Franklin County, PA Commissioners recently funded moving the Vietnam Veterans Memorial monument to protect it during the court-facility-improvement-project demolition scheduled for November. With the help of workers from Shull-Koontz Memorials, the monument was lifted from the courthouse plaza and moved across the street to Fort Chambers Park. Read more.


Veteran-Friendly Apartment Complex OKed In Bensalem: 

A new apartment complex with 41 units has been approved in Bensalem, PA (Bucks County). The township council voted last week to approve final plans for Pennrose Properties for the property on Mechanicsville Road. The group plans to offer affordable housing for veterans in the complex and, township officials say, will be working with local groups to identify eligible veterans. Read more.

Veterans, Military Retirees Will See A 2.8 Percent COLA Boost For 2019: 

Veterans receiving disability pay and military retirees will see a 2.8 percent cost-of-living boost starting in December, their largest increase in six years. On Thursday, Social Security Administration officials announced that the cost-of-living adjustment for 2019 for their beneficiaries will be 2.8 percent, the biggest increase since 2012. Last year the increase was 2 percent, and the previous three years were only 2 percent combined. Read more.


Here’s How To Beat The Holiday Crush Of Mail To Troops Overseas: 

Halloween ghouls and Thanksgiving turkeys are just around the corner, but Christmas and Hanukkah aren’t that far away, either. Military postal officials and the U.S. Postal Service have issued their suggested mailing deadlines for holiday packages and letters, for the best chance of getting them to military locations overseas in time for Christmas. To get them there in time for Hanukkah, which starts on Dec. 2 this year, subtract 23 days from the deadlines. Read more.

Veterans, Your Dreams of Entrepreneurship Can Become Your Reality: 

At some point, you may entertain the idea of being your own boss. Maybe you already have? There is so much to consider when it comes to entrepreneurship, and it starts with the preparatory work. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), preparatory work includes conducting market research, writing a business plan, deciding on a business name and location, getting federal and state tax identification, applying for licenses and permits, and more. The Small Business Administration SBA Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD) offers education and training on the entrepreneurial process through several paths, two of which are (B2B) and Boots to Business: Reboot. U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs (VA) Homeless Programs And Training Strengthen Efforts To Lower The Veteran Suicide Rate: 

More than 42,000 Americans die by suicide every year, with more than 6,000 of them being veterans. Veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than civilians. Suicide rates have been steadily climbing for several years, and suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., totaling more than twice as many deaths as homicide. Read more.

Whole Health is the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) new approach to delivering health care. It equips you to take charge of your health and well-being and to live your life to the fullest. 10 North Texas Veterans Donate Bodies To Science: 

A special group of veterans was honored at DFW Cemetery in Dallas, TX. The group was recognized not just for their service in life, but also for the unique way they gave in death. The 10 service members donated their bodies to science through the UNT Willed Body Program. Read more.
