The Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) is hosting a “Last Ride” event on November 4 at the Mammoth Park Giant Slide. Event hours are 12:00pm-4:00pm. This is your last chance to ride the Giant Slide before it is renovated in 2019!
The event features crafts, raffle items, music, games, snacks, hot drinks, and more! Professional “Last ride” photos will be offered and visitors will be able to purchase their photos and pre-order plaques and ornaments to be made from the steel of the original Giant Slide. All proceeds from the event benefit the Giant Slide project and the CAB’s upcoming March for Parks event on March 30, 2019.
Visitors can also take a chance to be the very last rider down the Giant Slide! The CAB is selling chances to be drawn at 3:45 p.m. during the “Last Ride” event; tickets are $25 per chance and are available by calling 724-830-3960, or at the Westmoreland County Parks office at 194 Donohoe Road, Greensburg.
The original Mammoth Park Giant Slide was opened on Memorial Day, 1973. The proposed new Giant Slide complex will include either one or two 110’ long stainless steel slides located side by side so users can “race” along the way. A 50’ long plastic slide will be installed for younger users with a cargo net climber that can be used to get back to the top. The short route back up for users of the longer slides is a natural sandstone rock/boulder climbing path that adds both fun and exercise to the trip back to the top. Racing slide riders can also access the cargo net for the second half of their climb if they desire. New and improved ADA-compliant walkways will also be constructed.
The Mammoth Park Giant Slide is located in Mount Pleasant Township, and is accessible via the Greensburg – Mt. Pleasant Road from Greensburg and via routes 981 and 982 from Latrobe or Mount Pleasant.
