Residents, Family Members and Staff Honored During Veterans Homes Week: 

Pennsylvania’s six veterans homes, operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), are honoring their residents, family members and staff with week-long festivities during the annual Veterans Homes Week, June 10-16, 2018. The DMVA provides personal and skilled nursing care to more than 1,300 veterans and their spouses in a safe and caring environment. Read more.

The Pennsylvania Military Finance Alliance announces two free conferences – one in Johnstown, PA (Cambria County) and another at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA (Lebanon County) to educate members of the military, veterans, and their families on the unique financial and investment decisions they will face. Wall Of Faces In D.C. Still Needs 28 Photos Of PA Veterans That Died As A Result Of The Vietnam War: 

Thank you Pennsylvania for your continued support in helping The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the DMVA locate a photo for PA service members who died as a result of the Vietnam War. Because of your tremendous effort, only 28 photos are still needed between seven PA counties. Want To See Rare Regal Fritillary Butterflies For Free? There's A Guided Tour At Fort Indiantown Gap: 

The rare regal fritillary butterflies have disappeared from nearly everywhere in the eastern U.S., as native grasslands have been destroyed and converted to other human uses. The once common species, though, calls Fort Indiantown Gap in Annville (Lebanon County) its home. At the 17,000-acre, National Guard training center, the grassland habitat needed by the butterflies is created and maintained by repeated and frequent soil disturbance from military operations, by controlled burning, and various stewardship efforts. Graduating High School Doesn’t End Your Chance To Join The PA National Guard: 

Some people believe that after you graduate high school, you may have missed your chance to join the PA National Guard. That is in fact false, and the PA National Guard can still help high school seniors with their futures, offering different enlistment bonuses and job opportunities. Watch video.

FatherFest To Feature A Variety Of Aircraft At Helicopter Museum: 

Various aircraft from military to home-built will highlight this year’s FatherFest on Sunday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center (AHMEC) (Chester County). The legendary annual event, which began in 2000 as a way to honor dads for all they do, also features antique cars and motorcycles, food trucks, a beer garden, sports-oriented inflatable games and more. Governor Wolf Announces $1.6 Million For Troops For Teachers Program: 

Governor Tom Wolf announced that his administration has secured a $1.6 million, 5-year Troops to Teachers grant. The program, managed by the Department of Defense’s Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), makes federal funding available to recruit and help military veterans who are considering a career in teaching. Milton Middle Schoolers Chip In For Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors: 

In 2017, Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc. provided $1.3 million in assistance to Pennsylvania members of the military who were wounded in the line of duty. “What we collect (in donations), we push out,” Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Randy Marchi, the organization’s treasurer, told a group of Milton Middle School students and staff on Thursday. Read more.

Temple University Takes Comprehensive Approach To Serving Military-Connected Students: 

Temple University’s Military and Veteran Services Center (MVSC) was developed to not only be a safe space for the university’s military-connected students, but also a resource that positively impacts their entire higher education experience. Read more.

Arlington Cemetery Considers New Rules For Eligibility: 

On May 13, 1864, as the American Civil War raged and casualties mounted, 21-year-old William Henry Christman of the 67th Pennsylvania Infantry became the first soldier to be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery. Over time, more than 420,000 veterans and their relatives have joined Christman in making the military cemetery their final resting place. Read more.

Acupuncture On The Mountainside: 

Building on the success of providing acupuncture to veterans during the 2017 VA Summer Sports Clinic in San Diego, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) acupuncturists and clinic support staff served veterans again at the 2018 National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic (NDVWSC). Known as “Miracles on the Mountainside,” the program encourages health and healing through adaptive recreational therapy for over 400 veterans each year. Recently, the national rehab program has begun to include integrative health clinics, introducing veterans to complementary practices such as acupuncture, yoga, massage and more. Read more.

America's Warrior Partnership Annual Survey – Military Veterans Seek Opportunities To Connect With And Give Back To Their Community: 

America’s Warrior Partnership has announced the results of its 2018 Community Integration Annual Survey Report, which for the second year in a row has found that the most sought-after resources by military veterans are centered around opportunities to connect with and give back to their community. Overall, 20 percent of the population of veterans surveyed are only looking for either a connection to other service members, recreational activities or ways to continue serving in a civilian capacity through volunteerism. Army Veteran Gets Help From Nonprofit After He Falls On Hard Times: 

A sequence of hardships stacked up against Craig Mitchell, 58, nearly a decade ago — a leg injury worsened diabetic symptoms causing him to drop out of college, his mother’s death created a void in his life, he faced eviction notices and he was convicted of drug possession charges. He hit rock bottom. Mitchell, an Army veteran who served at Fort Benning from 1978 to 1981, accepted a plea bargain and eventually took jail time until entering rehab and support housing. Read more.

Board Of Veterans’ Appeals Resolves Record Number Of Claims To Date For FY 2018: 

Underscoring the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) pledge to reduce the wait time for those appealing disability benefits claims, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, as of May 27, has signed more than 53,650 decisions to date in fiscal year (FY) 2018, which is approximately 86 percent more than the 28,839 decisions signed through the same period last year. Burn Pit Registry – Veteran Participation Contributes To Important Research Efforts: 

Researchers may have found a possible link between blast exposure during military service and difficulty breathing and/or decreased exercise stamina among Burn Pit Registry participants. Researchers previously had found links between smoke and particulate matter and pulmonary symptoms, but the link between explosion blast waves and cardiopulmonary symptoms several years after exposure is new. LGBT Veteran Suicide Prevention: 

Suicide prevention is the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) highest clinical priority. Every death by suicide is a tragedy and VA is committed to connecting veterans who are experiencing an emotional or mental health crisis with life-saving support. The most vulnerable veteran communities, including LGBT veterans, face some of the biggest obstacles in seeking help. LGBT veterans experience depression and suicidal ideations at twice the rate of heterosexual veterans. Read more.

Military Markers Honor Soldiers Killed In WWI: 

Cemetery markers for two Franklin Parish, Louisiana men who were killed in action during World War I are now dressed with bronze U.S. military service plaques thanks to a community service project initiated by Dustin Farris and supported by members of the Franklin Parish High School JROTC program. POW Veteran Survives 1,367 Days In Captivity, Continues To Serve In Navy For 22 Years: 

Whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. For retired commander Jack Schwartz, that seems to be the case. The 22-year navy veteran spent 1,367 days in captivity as a prisoner of war during World War II. He turned 103 years old April 28, 2018. For Schwartz, it all started just three days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. On Dec. 10, 1941, he was a navy lieutenant junior grade stationed in Guam as a civil engineer responsible for the water supply, roads, the breakwater and some construction. Read more.

 Executive Order Supporting Mental Health Care For Transitioning Service Members Now Underway: 

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that the White House has approved an interagency plan to implement President Donald Trump’s executive order supporting veterans with mental health care and suicide-prevention resources during their transition from uniformed service to civilian life. This Veteran's T-Shirt Calls Out The Sexism Experienced By Women Who Serve: 

One veteran's Memorial Day message is going viral as an example of the everyday sexism female service members continue to face. Former Navy service member JoAnn Ortloff took a moment last week to write a powerful post in the Facebook group, Pantsuit Nation. While the group is not public, Ortloff's message struck a chord and has been liked over 63,000 times and inspired thousands of comments. Read more.

Trinity Health Launches Military And Veterans Health Program To Support Better Care, Better Health For Military And Military Families: 

Trinity Health recently celebrated the official launch of a cultural competency and health care program focused on the unique needs of military veterans, active members of the military and their families. While the celebration took place in Germantown, Maryland, Trinity Health's Military and Veterans Health Program officially launched in both Maryland and Pennsylvania. Read more.

VA thanks Nine Communities Across The Country For Being Veteran-Friendly: 

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently thanked nine veteran friendly communities from across the country to highlight community-based efforts of improving the veteran outcomes. Two Pennsylvania communities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh were on the list. Read more.

Veteran Glided In Behind Enemy Lines On D-Day: 

D-Day, June 6, 1944, was the largest amphibious invasion in history. Over 150,000 American, British, and Canadian troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, but over 15,000 airborne soldiers dropped in behind enemy lines on D-Day. Most parachuted in, but over a thousand landed in Normandy inside gliders made of plywood. Ninety-seven-year-old Millcreek, Utah, resident John “Jack” Whipple piloted one of the hundreds of gliders to set down in the fields of France on that June morning. Read more.

Veteran Sex Offender Access To Housing And Services After Release From Incarceration – Obstacles And Best Practices: 

Within the population of veterans who are incarcerated, registered sex offenders are both a particularly vulnerable group and a substantial sub-population. Nationally 35 percent of veterans in prison are incarcerated for a sex offense, compared to 23 percent of non-veterans (Bronson 2015). Sex offenders have an additional disadvantage, beyond a criminal record, of the immense social stigma which leads to extensive residency restrictions. Read more.

Operation Recognition is a program that honors veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam by granting them high school diplomas. It’s a belated gesture of our lasting respect and appreciation for their service and commitment to our nation. Read more.

Victor And Allen Pedersen, Brothers Whose Stories Are Lesser Known But Equally Important To The Famous Veteran They Rest Beside: 

Sgt. Victor Pederson enlisted in the Army a little over a year before the United States entered World War II. He served in the 41st Infantry Division, a unit activated from the National Guard divisions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. When the United States entered World War II, Pederson and the 41st deployed to the Pacific theater. Read more.

Video Campaign Focused On How Treatment Can Transform Lives: 

In recognition of Mental Health Month this May, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) emphasized the positive impact of mental health treatment through a video campaign spotlighting hundreds of veterans who have stepped forward to combat the stigma around mental health. “VA is a leader in our nation when it comes to mental health treatment,” said acting VA Secretary Peter O’Rourke. Vietnam Womens Memorial: 

Chaplain Alice Farquhar-Mayes served in Vietnam. She flew medical evacuation missions as a flight nurse with the Air Force Nurse Corps from 1967 to 1971. C-SPAN captured her dedication to the Vietnam Women's Memorial in 1993. Over 265,000 American women served during the Vietnam era (1956 through 1975) and over 11,000 saw duty in Vietnam. The majority served as nurses, caring for thousands of wounded servicemen in the difficult conditions of crowded transports, harsh weather, difficult terrain, and long hours. Watch video.
