March 28, 2018, Greensburg--Volunteer drivers are being recruited to provide transportation for Westmoreland County veterans to VA Pittsburgh hospitals for medical appointments. This service is available at no cost to riders thanks to dedicated volunteers.
Department of Veterans Affairs Director Matt Zamosky stated this week, “We’re experiencing a need for additional volunteer drivers right now. New volunteers will augment those currently offering their time to provide this valuable service, ensuring that this option continues to be available to those Veterans who need it.” Zamosky’s office coordinates the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Van Service.
Eligibility for DAV van drivers is determined by Veterans Affairs.
Seating on the vans is on a first come, first serve basis for eligible Veterans. The Central Westmoreland van runs Monday through Friday for appointments between 9 a.m. and noon in order to avoid rush hour traffic. The Northwest Westmoreland van runs Thursday; pick-ups will be coordinated with drivers.
