Pennsylvania offers its eligible veterans or surviving spouses six extended care facilities throughout the state. The level of care provided includes personal care, skilled nursing care, and dementia care. For eligibility and application information Visit. 

Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA):

Veterans Temporary Assistance provides temporary financial help to veterans and their beneficiaries who reside in Pennsylvania, for necessities of life, such as food, dairy, shelter, fuel and clothing. To learn more about the program and how to apply Visit. 

  Around the State

A New Museum Of The American Revolution, Warts And All:

The new Museum of the American Revolution opens today (April 19) in Philadelphia. The museum, which grew out of the collection of the Valley Forge Historical Society, displays about 500 objects, from the expected muskets, military uniforms and teapots to more touchingly human ones, like a pair of baby shoes made from a British redcoat that a soldier in the Continental Army brought home after the war.Read more. 

Enhancing Veteran Opportunities At Penn State:

Penn State is trying to become the best university in the country when it comes to supporting veterans. Scholarship opportunities are expanding, thanks to the Penn State World Campus and the generosity of a Penn State retiree. Al Matyasovsky wishes to show his appreciation for veterans and their service by establishing a veteran education and academic fund (VEAF). Read more. 

Hepatitis C Treatment Available At Wilkes-Barre VAMC:

More than 75 percent of people with Hepatitis C are baby boomers, and many don’t even know that they are infected because they have no symptoms. Hepatitis C can lead to liver damage, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all baby boomers (those born 1945-1965) get tested for Hepatitis C. Simply contact your primary care team or call 1-877-928-2621 and request a Hepatitis C test. If needed, treatment for this curable disease is available at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center. The VA Wants To Hear From Veterans, Families And The Public:

The Wilkes-Barre Veterans Affairs Medical Center is hosting two town halls for veterans, family members and the public to provide feedback on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operations and recommendations for VA programs. The town halls are two of many the VA is holding around the country. Employees will be on hand to assist veterans with filing, status of claims and other benefits services. Veterans Build Project:

York Habitat for Humanity is currently seeking an active duty service member or veteran applicant to become their next York Habitat for Humanity homeowner in Manchester, PA . There are three criteria used to determine if you qualify. You must show a need, have a stable income and volunteer. The vacant lot is located at 935 Conewago Avenue. Through the Habitat program, local community and veteran community, this home was built almost completely by volunteers led by Habitat staff. This home will be sold to a qualified Habitat family only after they have completed all requirements of the homeownership program. Because of Habitat’s unique program that utilizes volunteer labor, donated land & in-kind materials, the cost to build this home will be substantially less than the actual value of the home. Over 400 volunteers were needed to complete the construction of the home. For more information contact:

The trip includes visits to the Vietnam memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and more. Space is limited. Register here. VA Makes Wait Times For Patients Transparent For Veterans:

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking unprecedented steps to increase transparency. The VA has launched a new Access and Quality Tool that provides veterans with an easy-to-use, easy-to-understand way of accessing patient wait time and quality of care data. This tool not only provides veterans with more information about VA services, it increases accountability and ensures VA is held to a higher standard. Read more.

VA REACH VET Initiative Helps Save Veterans Lives:

Suicide prevention is one of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) highest priorities. As part of VA’s commitment to put resources, services and all technology available to reduce veteran suicide, VA has launched an innovative program called Recovery Engagement and Coordination for Health – Veterans Enhanced Treatment (REACH VET). The 5th annual PA CARES Training Summit will expand the knowledge base and skills of behavioral health providers who deliver services to active military members, veterans, and their families. Targeted audience includes, but is not limited to: community mental health and substance abuse agencies, social workers, professional counselors, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, clergy/pastoral or spiritual practitioners, and the staff of PA veteran centers.

The Pennsylvania State Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs (PSACDVA) Western District is holding a fundraiser featuring two nationally recognized Elvis Tribute Artists. Dinner is homestyle and the show starts after dinner. There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 during the show. Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased by mail or at the Veterans Affairs Office.
