Thanks to the generosity of the Solomon & Sylvia Mendel Charitable Trust, Westmoreland County veterans will now have access to rides to medical appointments to VA medical facilities in Pittsburgh in a sparkling, new Ford Econoline van.
"The DAV Van Program is one of the most utilized veterans' programs in Westmoreland County. This generous donation will help ensure that this service will be available to help get our vets to Pittsburgh's VA hospitals for a long time," says Matt Zamosky, Director, Westmoreland County Veterans Affairs.
Transportation is provided to both VA Pittsburgh medical facilities thanks to volunteer drivers under the auspices of the Disabled American Veterans. Rides may be scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon to allow volunteer drivers to avoid rush hour traffic. Seating is provided on a first come, first served basis for Veterans; bona fide caregivers are also eligible for transport if space is available and their assistance is medically necessary.
To schedule transportation, call at least one week in advance. Call Westmoreland Veterans Affairs at (724) 830-3530 for rides from central Westmoreland (Mon-Fri) and northwest locations (Wed-Thu). Call (814) 445-1551 for rides from Donegal (Tue- Fri).
