Summer is just around the corner and is a great time to enjoy the beautiful weather outdoors. Unfortunately, the heat and humidity can create problems, especially for the elderly. Here are a few tips to keep you safe during the summer months.
• Drink plenty of fluids. It is recommended to drink 6 to 8 glasses per day.
• Pick appropriate clothing. Loose, lightweight clothing is recommended as well as a hat.
• Turn the air conditioner on or find a place with air conditioning. This is extremely important when the outside temperature is very high.
• Watch for signs of heat stroke. Symptoms can include headaches, confusion, nausea, and dry skin.
• Review medications. Some medications have side effects such as sensitivity to UV rays.
• Wear sunscreen because avoiding sunburn is essential.
Also remember to be a good neighbor or friend and check on the elderly often, especially during the long hot days of summer. Go out and enjoy the summer months but be safe.
