Westmoreland County Area Agency on Aging Information Line: As we age, nutrition becomes very important yet often an obstacle for the elderly. Many age-related changes impact our ability to taste, smell, chew and enjoy food. By making some changes, you can improve your nutritional status and enjoy food again.
First, review your medications or your medical problems that may affect your appetite. Side-effects of medications can alter the taste of food. They can also prevent you from absorbing essential vitamins and nutrients. Lastly, medications can dampen your appetite so you do not feel hungry and thus eat less.
Aim for a variety of foods. Too often we get into a food “rut” eating the same foods prepared the same ways. By adding new foods and boosting flavor with spices and herbs, you can enhance your food and make it more appealing. Try adding new foods such as Greek yogurt, whole grains, low-fat foods, and lean meats to your diet. You may also want to experiment with new cooking methods such as grilling, baking, or steaming instead of frying your food.
