Saturday, March 27, 2010 is your chance to show support for having a "greener" Westmoreland County. The place is Twin Lakes Park, where people from all over the county will gather to participate in the March for Parks in support of expanding and enhancing parks and recreation opportunities in the county.  The event is presented by the Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Board and is presented by Westinghouse, UPMC Health Plan, Chick-fil-A and WTAE-TV.  Event hours are 9:00am to 12:30pm.
  {The Year of the Dog - 2010}
 Bring Your Dog to the March!

Raise at least $25 in your Dog's name to support the Twin Lakes Dog Park, and your dog will receive a free March for Parks Doggie Bandana!

To Register your Dog, just write your Dog's Name in the appropriate blank when you register.

Download the March for Parks "Year of the Dog" Flyer (.pdf file) for more detailed information.

Prior to the event, marchers (and dogs) collect monetary contributions to support the March.  Those marchers who collect $25 or more will receive a t-shirt.  Dogs that collect $25 will receive a bandana.  People or dogs that collect over $100 or more to receive a gift card to Wal-Mart.  The more you raise, the higher denomination the gift card will be.

Walkers, runners and dogs may participate as individuals or teams.  Any group of three or more people or dogs can be a team.  Organize your friends and family, your school, place of worship, or a community organization.  Get your company involved.  Complete the team information when you register to become eligible for the engraved plaques that will honor the top fundraising teams.

The money raised at past Marches has really started to make an impact in the community.  Here are some recent projects for which March For Parks funds have been designated:

* Construction of Twin Lakes Park Expansion Phase I, including Peach Plaza Skate and Action Park, community garden improvements, and acquisition of 85 acres for future park expansion.

* Construction, planning, and acquisition of lands for the Coal and Coke and Westmoreland Heritage trails.

* Planning and engineering for Twin Lakes Park Expansion Phase II, to include an area for tubing and sledding, dog park, universally accessible playground, pavilions, a life trail for seniors and road and parking extensions.

This year marchers will have the opportunity to designate the funds they raise.  Choices include: Walking & Biking Trails, Dog Park, Tubing and Sledding Runs, Wheelchair Acessible Playground, or Land Acquisition.  Non-designated funds will be used where they are most needed.

DJ Dave Haering and Mike the Balloon Guy head the list of fun activities at the event.  There will be a picnic lunch after the March including doggie treats for dogs, and the event will conclude with a door prize giveaway (including doggie prizes) and an awards presentation.  Home Depot will also be sponsoring a kid
's workshop at the event.

Registering online is the quickest way to sign up for the March.  To receive a registration form by mail, call (724) 830-3950.

So lace up those walking shoes, get your dog's leash ready, and head to Twin Lakes Park on March 27, 2010 for the eighth annual March For Parks.  The event is presented by the Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Board.  To receive a registration brochure call 724.830.3950.

{New}  Pavilions Can Now Be Rented One Year in Advance!

{Cedar Creek Pavilion #12}
Effective January 1, 2009 the scheduling for all Westmoreland County pavilion rentals will change from a calendar year schedule to a rolling schedule, where you can always rent one year in advance.

In the past, you could only rent for the current calendar year.  After January 1, you will be able to rent one year in advance, meaning that each month you will be able to rent for the same month the next year.  Example:  In June 2009 you will be able to rent for June 2010, July 2009 you can rent for July 2010.  This will enable weddings and other special events to be scheduled in a timelier manner.   This year we are not taking applications postmarked before January 1, 2009; after that we will be taking applications one year in advance of the rental.  If you have any questions or desire additional information please feel free to call 724-830-3950.

 Check Out the New Online Pavilion Availability Search

The Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation and the Information Systems Department are also pleased to announce that internet users can now search the pavilion rental availability for our four major County Parks online.

The search can be accessed by visiting www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/parks, then clicking "pavilion rental" on the navigation bar.  The new search features a calendar for every pavilion that shows what dates it has been rented, as well as pictures and the amenities included at each pavilion site.  The fee schedule and rental application is included as well.

Pavilions can be rented year round at Twin Lakes Park in Greensburg, Mammoth Park in Mount Pleasant Township, Northmoreland Park in Allegheny Township, and Cedar Creek Park in Rostraver Township.  For further information, contact Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation at (724) 830-3950.   Check out the link below...
