Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation Internships
Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation affords college students pursuing degrees in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology or other related fields an opportunity to perform an internship within the Juvenile Probation Department. Past college students who have performed internships with Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation have considered the internship to be a very valuable experience in obtaining a hands-on knowledge of the juvenile justice field.

Interns are assigned to shadow Juvenile Probation Officers in their daily job duties which would include:
  • Learning the policies and procedures of the Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation Department and how the Juvenile Act and the Balanced and Restorative Juvenile Justice philosophy and principles are implemented within Westmoreland County Juvenile Court
  • Attending court hearings for delinquent juveniles in front of a Court Master or Common Pleas judge, and assisting with the preparation of pre-dispositional reports for court hearings
  • Assisting with aftercare duties of adjudicated juveniles placed outside of the home in placements such as secure facilities, residential treatment facilities, group homes, foster homes, etc.
  • Attending check-ins within the community to monitor the progress of juveniles who are at home
  • Working with school-based probation officers who monitor the activities of juveniles on probation in eight school districts within Westmoreland County
  • Assisting juvenile probation officers with performing curfew checks on juveniles in order to hold them accountable for their actions
  • Assisting juvenile probation officers with drug testing of juveniles on probation
  • Working with the community-based monitoring and Restoration Program probation officers who install electronic monitoring equipment on juveniles to help ensure the safety of the community by electronically tracking probationers’ locations
  • Assisting and observing any other operation of the Westmoreland County juvenile probation office as deemed appropriate by the juvenile probation supervisor

To be eligible to apply to for an internship with the Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation Department you must:
  • Obtain approval from the department head of your college institution
  • Obtain Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Submit to a Criminal History Clearance with the Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation Office
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
  • Meet and interview with the juvenile probation supervisor conducting the internship

Your college institution would typically provide college credits for performing an internship based on your performance evaluation at the conclusion of your internship. Internships with Westmoreland County Juvenile Probation are non-paid positions.
