Love our Parks and Trails? Show your support at the March for Parks on March 19!

The 14th annual March for Parks will be held at Cedar Creek Park, Twin Lakes Park, and Murrysville on Saturday, March 19, 2016. We are fundraising for some great projects, such as a dog park, winter sports area, and accessible playground at Cedar Creek; BMX track lighting at Northmoreland Park; upgrades to the Giant Slide and a new disc golf course at Mammoth Park; and construction of 5.6 miles of the Turtle Creek Extension to the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. Get your family, friends, and co-workers together, collect donations to turn in and march for your school, your business, your club, or in memory of a loved one. Visit the March for Parks page to register online.

Caregiver Support Meetings

Caring for a loved one at home is stressful, no matter the circumstances.

But you aren’t alone—Westmoreland County’s Area Agency on Aging Caregiver Support Group is there for you.  We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 1pm -3pm at the Historic Troutman building in downtown Greensburg, second floor.
Join us to share information and experiences in an informal, small group setting. Anyone providing care to another individual is invited to these get-togethers, where you can chat with Aging staff and others walking in your shoes, discuss topics of interest, or merely offer support. It doesn’t matter who you care for or what the recipient’s diagnosis is, we welcome all caregivers into our group.

Participants tell us that being part of the group makes them feel less alone, gives them a safe place to express their concerns, and offers a warm and friendly environment where they can share successes and failures. Some continue to attend or even join the group after their loved one has passed on or has moved out of the home.
Questions? Please call Milene Brennan at 724-830-4444, or visit the Area Agency on Aging website to gather upcoming support group dates.  The next meeting will be Feb 10th at 1pm.

Veterans Affairs

Twilight Wish Foundation has reached out to Westmoreland County’s Veterans Affairs to help spread the word that their organization grants wishes to senior citizens & military veterans who financially cannot do so on their own. A national 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, Twilight Wish’s mission is to help make the world a nicer place to age, one wish at a time. Eligible individuals are 68 or older and living in a care facility.

Since 2003, Twilight Wish has granted over 2,365 wishes ranging from simple needs such as dentures or hearing aids, to the more elaborate, meeting a favorite baseball player or flying a World War II veteran to the memorial in Washington D.C.

Types of Wishes Granted

Simple Needs for food, clothing, stoves, refrigerators, air conditioners, heaters, mattresses, accessibility items including walkers, wheelchairs, scooters and ramps, visual aids such as glasses and reading equipment; hearing aids to participate in activities and reduce isolation and despair; dentures to smile again and eat healthy fresh fruit and vegetables; etc.
Celebrating a Life wishes include meaningful and nostalgic wishes granted for either hospice patients, persons 90 or older, or those recipients with limited life expectancies. These wishes can be for family reunions, visits to hometowns, visits to places of comfort and joy, chances to return to their jobs or careers one more time, and any similar wish that validates and brings joy to the recipient.
Living Life to the Fullest wishes include riding on a motorcycle, having a book published, taking a ride in a hot air balloon, having songs listened to by the music industry, riding in a fighter jet, going on a special fishing trip, meeting a famous person, going to the ballgame and being greeted by favorite players, etc.
Veterans’ wishes can fall into any of the three programs above.  Twilight Wish considers it an honor to thank veterans, many in nursing homes, for what they have done for others over the years, wanting veterans to know that they are remembered and cared for. One third of all wishes granted are for veterans.

To nominate yourself or someone you know, visit Twilight Wish’s website to learn more about eligibility and the process. Or contact Becky Luft at (215) 230-8777 ext. 100, or via email at becky@twilightwish.org .

March is Westmoreland County IDD Awareness Month

The Celebration is kicking off Saturday, February 27 from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm at Westmoreland Mall Center Court.
"Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an opportunity for all of us to respect the uniqueness of every person and better appreciate everyone's abilities and talents, and share in our common humanity. We have so much to learn from our friends with developmental disabilities, if only we allow ourselves. This is our chance." ~Westmoreland County Commissioner Ted Kopas.
