November Proclaimed "Record Your Veterans Discharge Month"

The month of November has been proclaimed “Record Your Veterans Discharge Month” in Westmoreland County by County Commissioners Chuck Anderson, Tyler Courtney and Ted Kopas. During the month of November, all Westmoreland County veterans are encouraged to have their Veterans Discharge papers, also referred to as DD214’s, recorded in the Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds office. This document is recorded at NO CHARGE to the Veteran.

Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds Frank Schiefer encourages all Veterans during the month of November, and every month, to have their discharges recorded. By recording the document in the Recorders Office, you will always have access to your documentation when various needs arise which include, but are not limited to, eligibility for benefit purposes, employment, retirement and property tax exemption programs.

According to Schiefer, “The Military Discharge is the only document recorded in the Recorders Office that is not a public record, thus ensuring the privacy of all our Veterans. A Military Discharge is only made available with proper identification or when authorized in writing or by an order of the court. Our Veterans’ privacy is a top concern of my office.”

During the month of November, Veterans are encouraged to record their discharges in person or by sending them to the Recorder of Deeds office, located at 40 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Greensburg. According to Schiefer, “During the month of November, the Recorders office will process any request via mail and promptly return it to the Veteran at the address provided. Normally, the Recorders office will not return any documents without prepaid postage, but will relax this requirement to encourage all Veterans to have their Discharges recorded.”
