Westmoreland County DPS took possession of two 175 kW generators this week to be available during disasters to augment emergency power for municipal emergency operations in three municipalities.
The disasters of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee hit Pennsylvania in September of 2011 and caused over $18 billion dollars in damage throughout the United States. Through the first ever Westmoreland County Hazard Mitigation grant applications related to Presidential declared disasters these generators became a reality. The pre-identification of an emergency need by these municipalities through hazard mitigation projects identified in the County Hazard Mitigation Plan is a model of how Federal and State dollars can directly affect a local municipality that is proactive.
