  6. Westmoreland Cleanways - Backyard Composting Workshops

    March 10, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at St. Vincent College

    Don’t throw your kitchen scraps or yard waste into the trash. Don’t buy expensive fertilizer or use unnecessary chemicals on your gardens! Learn to turn your organic waste into a valuable, nutrient-rich soil additive perfect for improving the health of your plants. Westmoreland Cleanways, in partnership with the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, is conducting two Backyard Composting Workshops at the WPNR on the campus of St. Vincent College near Latrobe. Each workshop, conducted by a Penn State Master Gardener, will cover the economic and environmental benefits of composting, organic material that can be composted, how to maintain the compost pile, and how to use finished compost. The cost of the workshop is $10, payable at the door. Pre-registration is required. Registration deadline is one week prior to each workshop, or until the class is full.

  12. WCCC Criminal Justice Scholarship Dinner to honor Dr. Cyril Wecht

    March 19, 5:00 PM @ Westmoreland County Community College

    Westmoreland County Community College and the WCCC Educational Foundation Inc. will hold the second Criminal Justice Scholarship Dinner honoring Dr. Cyril Wecht, forensic pathologist, attorney and medical-legal consultant, Thursday, March 19 at the Youngwood campus. Wecht currently serves as a certified clinical professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and teaches at Duquesne University, Carlow University and Aristotle University School of Law. He is chairman of the advisory board at the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law at the Duquesne School of Law. Two additional awards will be presented at the event. Thomas Horan of Greensburg will receive the 2015 Outstanding Criminal Justice Alumni Award. Horan graduated from WCCC in 1981 with a degree in Law Enforcement. He has almost 30 years of law enforcement service in Westmoreland County and is a adjunct instructor at WCCC. The 2015 Outstanding Criminal Justice Student Award will be

  2. Mental Health Issues in Adolescence

    March 20, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM @ The Westmoreland County Juvenile Services Center

    Adolescents in the juvenile justice system have substantially higher rates of mental disorders than those in the general population. It is reported over 75% of these adolescents suffer from disorders either detected or undetected. Anxiety and mood disorders are among the most common. Join us for this interactive training to understand adolescent mental health disorders. Any professional working within the juvenile justice profession, public education, or social services should attend.

    The March For Parks is 3 times the fun! Marches will be held at Twin Lakes Park, Cedar Creek Park, and the Murrysville SportsZone. All events will start at 10:00am and end at noon with lunch for registered participants. Prior to the events, marchers collect contributions as individuals or teams to benefit parks and trails projects in Westmoreland County. Those who individually raise more than $25 will receive a t-shirt and lunch card. The March For Parks is sponsored by the Westmoreland County Parks & Recreation Citizens Advisory Board.
