Strengthening Families Program Ages 10-14

Help your children navigate the teen years with the Strengthening Families Program, from Penn State Extension. This FREE seven-week series for parents/caregivers and youth meets once a week for 3 hours after school. The evening includes dinner and activities for the entire family. The program is being offered to all Westmoreland County families with kids in 5th and 6th grade, hosted by Greensburg-Salem Middle School.

The spring, 2016, sessions of "Love and Limits: Navigating the Teen Years--A Guide to Success" begin either Tuesday, Feb. 2nd or Wednesday, Feb. 3rd at 5:30 p.m. for 7 weeks of fun family activities, family meals, weekly prizes, childcare for younger siblings, and youth skill-building.

Youth learn and practice:
  • Empathy for parents/caregivers
  • Respectful communication
  • How to set goals for the future
  • How to manage stress and increased responsibility
  • Problem-solving skills
Parents/Caregivers learn how to:
  • Understand and prepare for the normal changes of adolescence
  • Support youth's goals and dreams for the future
  • Guide good behavior
  • Protect against substance use
